THE NEW NOTION

the young girl smiled, eyes half-lidded. you could see her teeth, slightly parted

she turned her head, followed by her shoulder. as she approached the old wooden bookcase, her hand unfurled from a tight fist. she tapped her nails along the highest tier of the shelves, searching for a certain trinket.

"i can never remember these," she said, her voice low. after scanning thrice the mass of books, plastic keepsakes, and boxes, she spotted a humanoid shape. it revealed itself from the clutter like a shadow; its form unfurled with a shift of the light.

you approached from behind, stepping beside her to take in this new object. it sat with its legs stuck out, staring up at you both.

"what do you see?" you said

she decided to curl her fingers around its torso, lifting its limp form into the air. iridescent fabric rustled quietly, crimping wherever she pinched it.

she shoved it in your face, then. strange blue eyes peered into your blue eyes,
